Have a taste of unique Peranakan or Nyonya food that is a fusion of Chinese, Malay and Indonesian flavours at Buffet Town. This popular buffet spot at Raffles City’s basement is bringing a piece of Peranakan heritage to its buffet spread.

From now until 31 October, buffet lovers will get to indulge in great Peranakan food like Nyonya chap chye, itek tim (salted mustard duck soup), otak-otak pangang, babi pongteh (braised pork), sambal sotong, Nyonya curry chicken, the house specialty – fried nyonya mee siam and many more in a nostalgic ambiance.

The selection isn’t too big but there are a few dishes worth trying. The fragrant nyonya mee siam is not to be missed. It’s spicy and packed with flavour, and is a nice change from the regular-style fried bee hoon. Another one of our favourite dishes is the salted mustard green duck soup. It has that salty and sour tang that balances out the richness of the duck. It is a lovely soup.

If you are a fan of otah (spicy fish paste), you will enjoy the otah-otak pangang. This classic Nyonya dish is brightly flavoured with various aromatic herbs, exotic spices, and infused with the sweet fragrance of rich coconut milk. This spicy formula is sure to wet your taste buds. The Nyonya buffet section also let you get into action filling up your own Kueh Pie Tee cup with the sweetly braised to perfection turnips.

However we were quite disappointed with the Nyonya curry chicken. The curry chicken is more like the usual Chinese chicken curry. We expect the Nyonya curry to be a bit richer, drier and thicker version of the standard chicken curry. Go for the babi pongteh instead. This Nyonya braised pork dish is sweet, savoury and delicious when eaten with rice. We were also disappointed that they don’t have ayam buah keluak which is a staple of Peranakan food.

There are also assorted Nyonya desserts like kueh lapis (layer cake), Kueh serimuka, chendol and more to sweeten up your Peranakan food trail. Besides the Nyonya section, Buffet Town also has other tantalizing buffet spread for you to tuck into. The other must-tries at Buffet Town include sushi and sashimi, prawn and vegetables tempura, fresh seafood, satay, hot cooked food, bamboo clams and homemade waffle and crepe with ice cream which is to die for.
