Swing back to 1960s Singapore and tuck into a parade of popular street-food fare as nostalgia reigns from 6 to 23 August at Ellenborough Market Café. With the Durian Season also in full-swing, there’s no better chance to indulge in our country’s national pastime than with a hearty buffet serving up the King of Fruit alongside an array of durian-based signature specialities.

Diners young and old will relish reliving the past as Ellenborough Market Café brings back the quintessential street-food icons of yesteryear – pick up roasted nuts from the Kacang Puteh station, have a Teh Tarik ‘pulled’ right in front of you, and watch closely as a traditional Ding-Dang-Tang seller cobbles sweet morsels of bite-sized caramel candy with his dainty hammer and metal pick.

Those who’ve been searching for an authentic taste of Grandma’s home-cooking can rejoice as the chefs are set to revive recipes of golden oldies such as Chicken Feet Kerabu, Achar Awak (Nyonya Pickled Vegetables), Lor Ark (Braised Duck), and Steamed Patin Fish with Nyonya Sauce. As a tribute to Singapore’s mix of races and cultures, dishes such as Malay Sayur Lodeh, Indian Mutton Vindaloo and even Eurasian Shepherd’s Pie will share the spotlight at the abundant buffet spread.

The King of Fruit, which auspiciously hits its peak season in the heat of August, promises to be a star-studded sensation of this buffet. Aside from the irresistibly tempting bounty of freshly-opened durian fruit, look forward to the chef’s original-recipe Durian and Bacon Fried Rice is a tasty medley of savoury and sweet flavours that’s surely not-to-be-missed; follow these with some sweetly-deserved Durian Crêpes or Durian Crumble from the dessert counter.
