Unique Traditional Teochew Mooncakes by Thye Moh Chan
Mooncakes have evolved tremendously over the years with different shapes, sizes to extreme exotic flavours. Iconic Teochew confectionary shop Thye Moh Chan, most notably famous for its Tau Sar Piah, has unveiled for the first time an exquisite Mid-Autumn collection of its signature Teochew Mooncakes using time-honoured recipes and traditional baking techniques.
Thye Moh Chan’s mooncakes stand out as a traditional yet unique embodiment of simple pleasures that will please both the young and old. With a line up of old favourites and refreshing new flavours marrying tradition and modernity, Thye Moh Chan artisanal mooncakes with a twist resemble their signature Tau Sar piah in a range of five flavours. Handcrafted with finesse, these traditional delicious creations boast light flaky pastry skin with laboriously handmade silky-smooth fillings.
With a hint of BreadTalk’s influence is the Yuan Yang (Medium (4 piece/box) – $24.80, Large (1 piece/box) – $22.80). Brimming with generous filling of savoury mung bean paste, fried shallots, white sesame, salted egg yolks and BreadTalk’s signature Spicy Pork Floss. Each bite was a symphony of flavours that unfolded on the palate, from savory and sweet to the subtle spice from the pork floss.
If you want something more simple, get the Single Yolk Sweet or Salty Tau Sar (Medium (4 piece/box) – $24.80, Large (1 piece/box) – $22.80). This mooncake consists of a tender pastry skin enveloping a sweet, dense filling of salty mung bean paste with fried shallots, white sesame, and one whole salted egg yolks in the center. For a more savoury taste, the Double Delight (Medium 4 piece/box – $24.80) is a must-try. True twin delights of red bean paste and a unique ‘crystal’ filling made with winter melon, melon seeds, dried orange peel, white sesame, spring onions, and glutinous rice flour.
Thye Moh Chan has also created a special durian mooncake (Medium 4 piece/box – $35.20) for durian lovers out there. Made only during the Mid-Autumn period, these delightful durian mooncakes are a rare treat and hot favourite of loyal Thy Moh Chan fans. The crispy pastry reveals a thick, smooth D24 durian-infused bean paste with alluring durian aroma.
