Sydney-based gourmet burger joint Charlie & Co. has made its way to Singapore. Brought in by the folks behind Jones The Grocer, this is Charlie & Co. first oversea outlet.
There has been so much hype about Charlie & Co, since it opens its door in the basement at ION Orchard. Gone are the days when cheeseburgers were simply meat and cheese squashed between two processed buns. The burgers on offer here are made with 100% pure Australian Wagyu, bratwurst sausages, grass-fed sirloin steak, fish, chicken and served with buns made in-house at Jones the Grocer’s bakery.
So how does this casual burger eatery fare and does it worth the wait? Well… we were quite disappointed with the burgers despite so much hype about it. We ordered the Mighty Charlie Burger ($17) and the New Yorker Burger ($17) and had to wait for 25 minutes for the burgers even though the eatery was not busy.
The New Yorker Burger was a little dry. The char-grilled grass-fed sirloin steak was not as succulent as we like it to be. The steak was a bit cold as it must have been removed from the grill for some time before it was plated up and served. As a result, it doesn’t allow the aged cheddar cheese to melt. Also, they could have been more generous with the caramelised onion, tomato sauce and mustard to give this burger a bit more flavour.
The Mighty Charlie Burger was a little better, although the wagyu beef patty was again not warm enough. The flavour of the patty was comforting and meaty. The tomato sauce smeared on the bottom half of the bun was quite sweet but slightly tangy and the aioli on the top was the same creamy goodness. The caramelised onions were sweet and rich and just enough that it didn’t overpower the other flavours.
Besides burgers, you can also add-on side dishes such as sea salt fries ($7), Parmesan and truffle fries ($8), onion rings ($7) or the seasonal salad ($7). Premium Australian beers from Little Creatures and ciders are also available.
