New pies at Pies & Coffee
Pie is a perfect complement to any meal. Imagine a meal full of tasty comfort foods, cooked with love and care, bundled in flaky dough, small enough to take on the go or enjoy it at the café. Already boasting more than 15 types of pies, both sweet and savoury, pie specialist and café Pies & Coffee recently introduced new pie creations and flavours to their menu.
New items that are available include the Wagyu Beef Rendang Pie ($8.95), a luxe version of our local favourite dish. The lean meat in the pie was simmered in its full- bodied spiced lemak Rendang gravy and was baked to perfection that melt-in-your-mouth. It delivers a wonderful balance of sweet and spiciness and the crust was flaky. For the health conscious and vegetarians, the Mushroom Ragout Pie ($7.50) will be a good option. Stuffed with three different types of mushrooms, Swiss Brown, Portobello and White Button mushrooms, this chunky mushroom ragout pie is packed with rich stew flavour.
Another interesting new creation is the Tom Yam Seafood Pie ($8.70). Using in-house and pre-pack tom yam paste, this east meets west pie is stuffed with tiny pieces of scallops, prawn and squid. However, the pie was a bit too salty for our palette and it simply lack the tom yam distinct hot and sour flavours that we yearned for.
Pies & Coffee also created their own version of the classic British’s Shepherd’s Pie. The Minced Beef Shepherd’s Pie ($6.95) is a layered casserole of minced beef, peas, carrots, herbs and potatoes. Somehow, this Shepherd’s Pie is not the same as the one we used to have. We were kind of disappointed as we found the minced meat a bit too dry and a lack of flavour. The mashed potatoes were good, but overall it was nothing special. If you have a sweet tooth, there’s an Open Face Apple Pie ($7.50) with a scoop of ice cream for your indulgence.
Like wine, people are now looking to pair just the right coffee with their desserts to end the meal on a memorable, mouth-watering note. Besides huge variety of pies, Pies & Coffee also serves up great gourmet coffee made with pure Arabica coffee beans supplied by Toby’s Estate. The coffee here are pressured-brewed and it has an intense, intricate aroma that go really well with the pies. So the next time you order your pie, remember to have a cup of coffee too.
The new pie items are now available at all Pies & Coffee outlets.
