All new a la carte menu at Da Paolo BistroBar
Tucked away in an amazing black and white house in Rochester Park with lush green foliage, at Da Paolo BistroBar you’ll think you’re dining at someone’s luxurious bungalow with an outdoor open kitchen and spacious indoor and outdoor dining areas.
Helmed by the son of Da Paolo Group, Chef Andrea Scarpa has given this Italian bistro a new lease of life with its new a la carte menu. Classic Italian bistro fares at its best, young and aspiring Chef Andrea’s uses fresh ingredients and bold flavours in the all new menu which include a wide selection of appetisers, salads, pastas and risotto, fish and meats, as well as artisanal Italian pizzas.
One of the interesting starters is the Persimmon Salad ($24). This unique salad is a riot of colour and flavour. The persimmons are thinly sliced and tossed with mixed greens, parma ham, pine nuts and Parmesan cheese in homemade raspberry vinaigrette. The exotic flavour and delicate sweetness of the persimmons balance out the greens marvellously. Every bite of this salad is refreshing and tantalizing – a pure delight for the taste buds. If you wanted something more comforting, try their Green Pea Soup ($15). This flavourful and smooth soup is light and refreshing. The slices of chorizo and a dollop of Gorgonzola cheese sauce gave this soup an extra richness and warmth.
Chef Andrea has also created a few new pasta and pizza dishes. The classic Italian dish, Veal Ravioli ($28), was cooked to perfection. Each homemade ravioli was stuffed with flavourful minced veal meats, onions and carrots and served on a bed of creamy celeriac puree. What made this dish stands out is the accompanied veal jus and roasted beetroot puree which gave this dish an added sweetness.
Instead of the regular tomato puree and toppings with cheese, Chef Andrea has given Da Paolo’s pizzas a sweet twist. The new pizzas in the new menu are Pear and Parma Ham ($28), a sweet pear puree based pizza with Parma ham and feta cheese and Sweet Corn and Smoked Duck ($24), a corn puree pizza with thin slices of smoked duck. Both pizzas are unique and interesting in taste. The texture and flavours seemed to blend really well. Each is also served with a small jug of melted Gorgonzola cheese for those who may prefer a richer flavour. But some how the pear and corn puree reminded us of baby food and they are a bit too sweet for main course. These pizzas could easily pass off as dessert.
If you are a meat lover, their all-new succulent Barbequed Pork Ribs ($42) will satisfy your carnivore cravings. The Iberico ribs are lightly seasoned and topped with homemade barbeque sauce and grilled to tender perfection. Served with oven-baked Parmesan garlic butter fries and aioli dip, the meat has an irresistible smoky flavour and it literally falls off the bone.
The new desserts menu is not to be missed at this bistro. If you love your Snickers bar, you will fall in love with Chef Andrea’s Chocolate Caramel Bar, Salted Peanut Nougat ($17). You simply can’t go wrong with nougat, caramel and chocolate. Stacked on a salty peanut butter chocolate base, each bite is packed with intense taste sensation. A good hit of salt brings out the high notes of these yummy sweet treats.
Another noteworthy dessert is the Salted Caramel Panna Cotta, Candied Almond Popcorn ($17), which includes a smooth caramel-flavoured panna cotta, crunchy honey-coated popcorn and a small jar of chilled mocha drink. The panna cotta brings the sweet – salty caramel touch, the popcorn gave a little bit of crunch and the mocha drink gave a tang of chocolatey goodness to this dessert. It’s not too heavy and gave a really nice sweet ending to a good meal.
