New Italian gourmet burgers at Covelli

When it comes to burgers, there’s nothing quite like a juicy meaty patty sandwiched between soft fresh buns. However, not all hamburgers are created equally. Be it a classic burger made with a thick juicy patty with tomato, lettuce and onion or a gourmet Wagyu beef burger, fast food chains or gourmet burger joints and restaurants have been coming up with new and creative burger flavours and styles.

One such place is Covelli, the casual chic Italian bistro located in the basement of Orchard Central. They did their burgers a little differently. Covelli’s new chef Dean Ng has ditched the buns for their new burgers menu. Instead you get two strips of puff pastry to go with the patty and other side servings.

At first look, the burgers look more like main courses than the usual burgers we used to have. It was also a little strange to eat them with a fork and knife. Out of the five new burgers, our favourites are the Covelli’s Signature Pork ($22) and the Australian Wagyu Beef ($30).

The pork burger is not your average backyard fare. The juicy char grilled smoky fennel pork patty is topped with charred pineapple, apple and brie cheese served with garlic butter herbed red skin potatoes and apple syrup. We like the taste and texture of sweet grilled pineapple and apple. The brie cheese gives the burger yet another unique taste and surprise for the taste buds.

The Wagyu beef patty is the star of the Australian Wagyu beef burger. The first bite is enough to send carnivores into a taste coma. Topped with caesar salad, avocado and New Zealand Kikorangi creamy blue cheese served with garlic butter herbed red skin potatoes and whiskey pommery mustard, the Wagyu beef patty was grilled to perfection and melt in your mouth goodness. The addition of blue cheese and avocado also gave this burger an intense flavour.

Other burgers include Obe Organic Beef ($24), Seafood Special ($24 – see first photo above) and Moroccan Mint Lamb ($26).

Eating a burger does not have to be a guilty pleasure now. This bun-less burgers will make a filling meal for weight conscious burger lovers. These new-styled burgers are definitely different from your usual burger fares. Personally, I still prefer my juicy patties sandwiched between soft breads and consume with my hands.
